Fandom: Wolf's Rain
Characters: Toboe, Tsume, and a smidge of Hige
Summary: A young waiter is reminded who he really is (takes place after the anime ending).
Word Count: 550
To Toboe’s nose, the man who walked in out of the rain smelled a lot like wet dog, but Toboe put on a smiling face and welcomed him into the restaurant anyway. At first the tall man with silver hair almost seemed to bare his teeth and growl when catching Toboe’s eyes, but the waiter paid it no mind being used to all sorts of odd customers. However, when the man refused to follow him to his seat, Toboe sighed in frustration and shrugged.
“Excuse me, I’m sorry if I’ve offended you somehow, but I really need to get you seated so I can get back to my post. So, if you would—“
“You don’t know what you are, do you?”
The deep, rough voice pulled at something in Toboe’s mind, but the odd question distracted him. “What I am? Um, I’m a waiter, I guess.”
“You’re a wolf. So why the hell are you here playing at being human?!” Anger poisoned the words and Toboe could swear he saw hackles bristling.
“Uh,” the petite boy was at a loss for words; this man was something else! “A wolf? Really, I’m sorry, but if you don’t sit down I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”
Before anything could escalate between them, another young man with wild hair strolled into the establishment and grabbed silver-hair’s arm. “Oi, I’ll explain outside,” wild-hair said quietly, dispelling the hackles on his friend. “Come on, we should find someplace else to eat. Let’s just leave him be.” It seemed for an instant that an argument was going to take place, but after taking a last look at Toboe, silver-hair relented and followed his friend outside.
Toboe, being young and curious as to what there could be to explain, called out to his manager that he was taking a quick break before going after the men outside. He ignored the ache in his heart that had formed the instant the two strange men had turned their backs to leave and convinced himself he was only following for fun.
“The kid doesn’t remember anything. I talked to the owner of this place — another wolf — and there’s nothing in the kid’s head besides human,” wild-hair said, putting a supporting hand on silver’s shoulder. “I’m sorry, Tsume.”
*Tsume*. . . Toboe’s chest swelled at the name and he hurriedly wiped at the tears that had suddenly come to his eyes. It didn’t make any sense why these emotions were plaguing him over people he’d never seen before.
Silver-hair — no, Tsume — clenched his fist tightly but then relaxed, shaking the hand off his shoulder and turning away. “Human, huh? He always did like humans. Forget him, we’ll go on with only the two of us.” Tsume shoved his hands into his pockets and started walking away, the other man following.
There was no reason why, but Toboe couldn’t let them leave without him. “No! Don’t go!” He leapt after Tsume, grabbing onto a sleeve in order to stop him. When he looked down, he saw a muzzle grabbing onto the cloth. His muzzle. Another look and it was just a hand again, but now Toboe knew. He looked up at Tsume and smiled.
“I do like humans, but I always liked you best.”
