Fandom: Harry Potter (2nd gen)
Characters: Lily (the second) and Snape
Summary: Lily needs help with her potions. Badly. (AN: This was to be the beginning of an epic Snape/Lily2 fic. . . that I never wrote.)
Word Count: 650

Lily’s failing grades in Potions had lead to it. Walking through the halls after class desperately thinking about a place she could practice mixing her potions without James popping in to bother her or Albus Severus trying to help her out (in which he usually ended up doing all the work for her). Lily wanted to learn how to do those darn potions on her own! In the middle of that thought, a door suddenly appeared before her.

“Oh. Well, that’s rather convenient.” The Room of Requirement was something Lily and her brothers had been told stories about since they were tiny babies, thanks to their father’s heroic actions and the tales they produced, so she wasn’t surprised at its sudden appearance. “Thank you, Hogwarts,” she called out to the school, stepping inside the room that had come to her aid and closing the door behind her. There were a few different tables set up with cauldrons and cutting boards next to a giant wardrobe that seemed to hold just about every common ingredient needed for the first year spells she was learning. Setting her potions book out on the nearest table, Lily rolled up her sleeves and got cracking.

Three failed attempts later, a snide voice behind her interrupted Lily’s potion-making. “My, you really are quite terrible at that. The mugroot has to be *half* an inch thick, not two inches. And you started stirring five minutes too early. Can’t you read that book in front of you?”

Turning in a huff, Lily was about to go off on the intruder when she suddenly froze with her jaw hung open. “Wha- You-“

“Ah, just as articulate as I imagined from your potions skills.”

“Professor Snape! What are you doing here?”

The man in the portrait smiled bitterly. “It would seem that the Room of Requirement decided I was required. So, here I am. And since it seems I’m stuck here, you might want to pull that last cauldron off the fire before it explodes.”

Lily jolted to the pot and pulled it off the fire, red hair flying about in her haste. When the room was safe, the little girl trotted back to the portrait of Snape and smiled at him. “Thanks, Professor! I don’t know how I would have explained breaking the Room of Requirement!”

She tucked some of her long red hair behind her ear and looked up gratefully at Snape. In taking his first good look at the girl before him, Snape’s eyes widened a fraction before his brows knitted in thought. “Tell me your name, girl.”

“I’m Lily! Lily Potter! And I know all about you, Professor Snape! My brother is even named after you. Well, sort of. His name is Albus Severus, so even though your name is his middle name, he was still named after you in theory.”

Snape stared at Lily, letting her words flow over him. She eventually trailed off when she realized Snape wasn’t listening. “What’s wrong, Professor? You look like you’ve seen a ghost, and I haven’t seen Nick around.”

Snape shook his head, sighing. “Nothing. No ghosts, just a terrible Potions student. Now, since you’re here with all this equipment, why don’t we actually try to improve your abilities instead of chattering about like a jack-a-ninny. Pick up that knife and three lengths of willow root.”

With Snape’s help, Lily made her first successful potion of the semester. Flushed with excitement, Lily ran over to the portrait that had guided her, stopping up short when she realized hugging the man in the frame wasn’t possible. She linked her hands behind her back and grinned anyway. “Thank you so much! It actually worked! You’re the best, Professor Snape! I’ll definitely be back here to get help from you again.” After a fond farewell that Snape didn’t return (though he didn’t scorn it either), Lily left the room to go eat dinner in the Great Hall. She all but skipped down the halls, pleased as punch that she had a secret rendezvous with Professor Snape. This year was going to be the best!
